Gin Rummy Rules - The Basics- Gin Rummy is the most popular variation of Rummy games. The object of the game is to create "melds" in sets (same value, 4-4-4) and/or sequences (in order, 8-9-10) of 3 and 4 cards to place on the table in hopes of running completely out of cards upon "melding" (called 'Going Gin'), or being able to meld and discard with 10 or fewer points remaining in your hand (called Knocking). Players start with 10 cards each and will draw and discard a single card per play to accomplish this goal. The game is normally played with a standard 52-card deck and 2 to 4 players, though some gin rummy online sites allow only two players per game.

- Oklahoma Gin is a variation of Gin Rummy played in the same manner except for the knocking feature. Players create "melds" in sets (same value) and/or sequences (i.e. 3-4-5) of 3 and 4 cards. Instead of requiring 10 or less points to knock, the very first card turned face up in the discard pile at the start of the hand will determine the amount of points a player may have left in his or her hand to knock. For example, after the initial deal (10 cards to each player from a standard 52-card deck), a single card is turned face up to start the discard pile. If this card is a 5, a player may knock if he/she can meld, discard and have 5 or fewer points remaining in his/her hand.

- Traditional Rummy is the oldest Rummy game out there - the Rummy that all other variations were based upon. Traditional Rummy rules invoke the use of a standard 52-card deck where each player is dealt 10 cards to start. Players create "melds" in sets (same value) and/or sequences (i.e. 3-4-5, same suit) of 3 and 4 cards. Aces can be used in high or low sequences (A-2-3 or Q-K-A) and always count as 11 points. Melds can be laid down and added to at any time throughout the game (during that players turn, of course). The first player to run out of cards wins.

- Kalooki, also know as Kaluki, is another popular variation of Gin Rummy with a few changes to the general rules. Kalooki rules allow for the use 2 standard 52-card decks, plus 4 jokers (108 cards). Each player receive 13 cards. Aces are counted as high rather than low, as in Gin Rummy and Oklahoma Rummy, meaning a sequence of Q-K-A can be used, but not A-2-3. Aces are counted as 11 points instead of 1. Players may meld at any time throughout the game so long as the first set of melds totals 51 points or higher. Sequence melds must be of the same suit. When a joker is used in a meld, it may be replaced by the appropriate card and placed into the players hand, or used elsewhere on the meld board. To replace a joker in a set, the remaining suits of the set must each be placed (ex: 3heart-3diamond-joker, replace joker with 3club and 3spade); sequence melds can replace the joker with the exact card it represents (ex: 3club-4club-joker, replace joker with 5club). The game ends when one player runs out of cards.
